Biomimicry has proven a valuable tool in recent years for architects and designers alike, who have found solutions to problems that have confounded the brightest minds throughout history by simply turning to nature. Through natural selection and thousands of millions of years practice, life has often already stumbled upon the most efficient solutions to some of our basic human problems, from learning how to span with skin structure from an eggshell, to mastering the wind from the wings of a hummingbird, biomimicry is just getting started. This demonstration of the former is a wind turbine that takes the incredibly efficient motion of the hummingbirds wings as precedent in producing electricity. How this translates from the hummingbirds agenda of conserving energy loss to ours of maximizing energy production is not exactly clear, but the result is an intriguing and attractive product that I could see making backyard renewables more marketable to the everyday consumer, which is something that I hope to see more of in recent years. As a student this serves to inspire and instill a curiosity about the applications of biomimicry in other arenas of design.
