In this weeks second post about the Waarmakers design studio in the Netherlands, we take a look at their seemingly unstoppable crusade to design sustainable alternatives to everyday lifestyle and product choices. Apparently its also going rather well, as that simple cardboard lamp from the last post goes for over $200 on their online store. This product is a motor scooter, already a sustainable choice in itself, with a body made of recycled composites. Cars, with their short lifespans and incredible user to materials ratio represent an enormous contribution to waste generation worldwide. By forming the body of an impact resistant composite fiber, we are assuring that a product bound to be a huge chunk of waste in the future can at least be made out of items bound to be tossed to begin with. This product also represent the twofold mission of the company by showcasing the material through a very simple portal in the exterior finish, it allows the user to boast the product as a statement about their sustainable lifestyle choices. Harnessing the fashionability of sustainability will be key in spreading products like these to a mass market, making recycling the new normal and not something noteworthy or even exorbitantly priced.
