This video has captivated my imagination since I first came across it a year or so ago. These modular robots from MIT seem to be working towards achieving the ultimate tool. Smart, modular, and self assembling, they can effectively create a variety of different robots, each potentially filling a different purpose. As the technology progresses I could imagine applications of similar technology in architecture. What if facades only exposed glazing when there was someone there to look through it? What if walls converted into furniture as you approached or gave command. What if power sockets or wireless power units followed you through the floor, providing you with charging and internet in every possible location. What if staircases self assembled as you walked through thin air. Who knows what a modular technology like this could develop into over the coming decades. These guys blow my mind.
